When the new county seat was laid out in 1859, it was named in honor of John Hemphill. The town received a post office in July 1859, with Michael Watson as postmaster. Residents received their mail triweekly. By 1900 the town’s population was reported as 279, and by 1914 it had reached an estimated 430.
