Is there sport climbing at the Gunks?
There are a few bolted climbs at the Gunks, but no sport climbs. The Gunks is one of the oldest climbing areas in the country. Fritz Wiessner first climbed at the Gunks in 1935, and he and Hans Kraus put up many classic routes in the 1940s.
How do you climb the Gunks?
Bring two-way radios for communicating past the big roofs on many Gunks climbs. Most routes can be climbed and rappelled with a single 60-meter rope. Double ropes can be handy, however, for the traverses, wandering pro, and roofs. They’re also nice for descending in fewer rappels.
Is Peterskill open for climbing?

The Shawangunk Mountains (folks usually call them “The ‘Gunks”) are a long ridge west of New Paltz that, mile for mile, has more trails, cliffs, swimming holes and waterfalls than just about any other place in Upstate New York.

The Mohonk Preserve, GCC, Access Fund, and Petzl have worked to install bolted anchors that eliminate the need to rappel from healthy trees with slings and rings. The primary reason for this action has been to reduce impact on the trees.
