BSL was recognised as a language in its own right by the UK government on 18 March 2003, but it has no legal protection. There is, however, legislation requiring the provision of interpreters such as the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.

Is BSL a dying language?

Our recent research into dying and threatened languages (2014) has shown that BSL is severely endangered. The most important way of making sure a language can survive, is for intergenerational transmission: parents and families must be able to hand on the language from one generation to the next.

BSL is an indigenous minority language and the first language of many deaf and hard of hearing children and young people in Wales. Welsh Government formally recognised BSL as a language in its own right in January 2014.

Who is BSL aimed at?

Family Sign Language (FSL) is a course aimed at families with deaf children aged between 0 and 5 years old. The FSL curriculum includes BSL signs for telling stories, playing games and is typically taught through 20 hours of tuition.

If you just want to the basic, you can sign with SSE. But if you want to master the sign language, BSL is the way to go. Even though it’s not grammatically correct like BSL, SSE is still understandable for many Deaf people and it is satisfactory as a language in its own.

Is BSL Regional?

We do not know if BSL has regional accents (systematic differences in the pronunciation of the same signs) but research has found that deaf people from different parts of the UK use distinct regional signs for the same meanings (like the variation in words meaning “bread roll” in English mentioned above).

How long does it take to learn BSL?

Work is ongoing to secure legal recognition of BSL and ISL in Northern Ireland. Scotland is the only region in the UK to have given legal recognition to sign language. The BSL (Scotland) Act came into force in October 2015 requiring Scottish Ministers to promote, and facilitate the promotion of, the use and understanding of BSL.
