Athrun adds that Shinn killed Kira but Kira never wanted to kill him. Rey counters that destroying Freedom and the Archangel was a direct order from ZAFT’s headquarters, that all of them, including Athrun, were obligated to obey.

Shinn’s family was killed in a crossfire between mobile suits from the Earth Alliance and Orb during the Bloody Valentine war. Stella had gone berserk due to her fear of dying and her mobile suit is then destroyed by Kira Yamato, a pilot from the Archangel ship that is trying to stop the war.
Did Kira Yamato die?
Kira is apparently killed, even as the Archangel is destroyed. In fact, Kira survived the Freedom’s destruction and is recovered, severely injured, at the same time as the surviving crew of the Archangel abandons the ship.
