With the engine off, open the car’s hood and find the dipstick. Pull the dipstick out from the engine and wipe any oil off from its end. Then insert the dipstick back into its tube and push it all the way back in. The dipstick shows the oil is low and needs to be topped off.

The hole at the top is the full mark, the hole at the bottom (closest to the tip) is the 1-quart-shy-of-being-full mark. So, if you are centered between the holes, you should only need 1/2 a quart to fill it up.

It should sit between the upper and lower markers on the dipstick. If the oil level is towards the lower mark then it’s time to top up, make sure you check the oil level again after filling to make sure the level is correct, and don’t over fill as this can cause leaks and damage to the engine…it also won’t smell too great either!
