This is the best explanation imo. Vegeta clearly instructed Nappa but Nappa didn’t listen and he messed up afterwards, If only he’d listened. Goku broke Nappa’s spine, so he would never be able to fight again. Either Toriyama didn’t think of healing pods yet, or they don’t heal injuries of that caliber.
