How do I find the charges of ions?
There is a quick way to work out what the charge on an ion should be:
- the number of charges on an ion formed by a metal is equal to the group number of the metal.
- the number of charges on an ion formed by a non-metal is equal to the group number minus eight.
- hydrogen forms H + ions.

A hydrogen ion is created when a hydrogen atom loses or gains an electron. A positively charged hydrogen ion (or proton) can readily combine with other particles and therefore is only seen isolated when it is in a gaseous state or a nearly particle-free space.
