What is VY and VX?

Vx is the speed where you have the most excess force (thrust), and Vy is the speed where you have the most excess power (horsepower).

How is climb rate calculated?

If a climb gradient table is not available, the rate of climb can be calculated manually. Take your ground speed in nautical miles per hour, divide by 60 minutes per hour, and multiply by the climb gradient in feet per nautical mile. The result will be the required rate of climb in feet per minute.

Positive rate is pretty much the only indication of this since there is a little bit of a lag in the VSI, by the time it shows positive rate you are far enough off the ground that you really don’t need to worry about touching again.
