Can needle felting be washed?

Yes, you can wash your needle felting sculptures and other items. However, there are some issues to think about before you decide to do that as you may find that there is a possibility that you damage your felted piece.

What is a needle felting mat?

The main purpose of a felting mat is to catch the tips of your needles as they pass through your wool and protect them so they don’t break. It also protects your work surface too from being pin pricked by the needles.

Can you wet felt after needle felting?

When wet felting after needle felting, you must be careful to wet felt gently to avoid shifting or blurring the edges of your design. Wet felting after needle felting can be used to: Remove needle marks. Smooth out designs and stray fibers.

Why is my wool not felting?

Using too much can sometimes hinder the felting process. You only need just enough water to wet the fibres. Any excess should always be dabbed up with a dry towel. Any soap left in the wool can make the wool fibres brittle over time.

How can you tell the difference between felting needles?

Felting needles come in different gauges. The gauge number refers to the diameter of the needle. The higher the number, the finer the needle so a 40 gauge needle is finer than a 36 gauge. Different needles come with varying numbers of barbs.

What to do with hay used for felting?

Their wool is full of hay or not as high quality and not favorable for felting. I use this wool to make the bases for my sculptures. We take this wool and run it through a picker. (a tool that pulls the fiber apart) I ball up the wool and put it in nylon stockings. I throw them in the washing machine with some soap.
