What is Vogt limbal girdle?

What is Vogt limbal girdle?

Vogt’s limbal girdle is a degenerative condition of the cornea usually seen in elderly individuals; it is rarely seen under the age of 40 years.

What causes limbal girdle of Vogt?

And the White Limbal Girdle of Vogt—the most common type of degeneration caused by aging—is a thinning of the cornea’s periphery that causes visible changes along the corneal periphery but does not cause significant visual changes.

What is dystrophy and degeneration?

affections of specific cells in one or more tissues that initially show a normal function. The term abiotrophy was previously applied to these lesions, but has gone out of use. Degeneration is an equivocal term used for both acquired and hereditary disorders. Aging may or may not be considered as dystrophy.

What causes band Keratopathy?

Common causes include eye trauma, eye surgery, or eye inflammation. High amounts of calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia) can also lead to band keratopathy. This is usually due to a systemic disease (those that affect the entire body) such as sarcoidosis, kidney disease, or hyperparathyroidism.

What is spheroidal degeneration?

Spheroidal degeneration is characterised by sub-epithelial accumulation of spherical opalescent droplets that coalesce to form bands or nodules with elevated corneal epithelium. The degenerative process is mainly seen in the inter-palpebral part of the cornea.

What is a Khodadoust line?

A Khodadoust line separates immunologically damaged endothelium from unaffected endothelium. In the area of damage, the endothelium is decompensated resulting in stromal and epithelial edema. The diagnosis of immunologic graft failure is made if signs of rejection do not clear within 2 months of treatment.

What is Terrien?

Terrien marginal degeneration is a painless, slowly progressive thinning of the peripheral corneal stroma. It is usually bilateral but may be asymmetric. As opposed to other causes of peripheral corneal thinning, there is typically no inflammation and the corneal epithelium remains intact.

Is band Keratopathy painful?

Deposited calcium band is observed horizontally on the cornea and there is lesion free, lucid space between the limbus and lesion. It may cause blindness as the result of opacification of the cornea, block the visual axis and cause pain due to corneal epithelial erosions (2-4).

What does band Keratopathy look like?

Keratopathy appears as a superficial greyish-white corneal opacity resembling frosted or ground glass, with ‘white flecks’ and ‘clear spots’interspersed within the band, giving it a ‘Swiss cheese’ appearance. The opacity is covered by clear epithelium with lacunae of uninvolved tissue.

What is the difference between degeneration and dystrophy?

Degenerations are usually unilateral, asymmetric and often peripheral. Changes caused by inflammation, maturity or systemic disease result in deposition, thinning or vascularization of the corneal tissue. Dystrophies are rare conditions and may not present in a primary setting.
