Can you screw straight into Thermalite blocks?

Fixing to Thermalite, Durox and other lightweight blocks really requires special fixings which can grab the block from inside the hole you drill. Plugs and fixings that expand as you screw the fixing into the plug tend to break away the inner surface of the hole and become loose in no time at all.

Should you wet Thermalite blocks?

The problem with thermalite blocks is that you often get shrinkage cracks as they dry out, so it’s best not to wet them down to start with. A slightly weaker mix with lime added can also help the blocks not cracking through the middle. Don’t lay out too long a bed as you lay them.

Can you screw directly into breeze block?

Re: Screwing into Breeze Block Or to put it another way, breeze blocks may “fall apart” as you screw into them as the screw tears a thread in the block. I would (and have done so often) use traditional plugs and screws for breeze block.

I had the same thing, Thermalite’s are great at soaking up moisture and they swell a little in the process. If the mortar is any stronger than 5:1 then the blocks crack as they dry out. Obviously they only crack vertically as the walls can shrink quite happily downwards.

The only thing about Thermalite blocks is that they create an extremely soft substrate and therefore can be tricky to render. Ideally, Thermalite blocks need finishing with a material that matches them in softness and flexibility in order to prevent cracking.

You will not get a good fixing in thermalite for the load of 50 kilos,what you need are metal expanding bolts but they willjust burst the thermalite block.If you are a brickie best to cut out the fixing sections in the thermalite & replace with some good solid bricks & replaster then use metal anchor bolts.

Can you drill pilot hole in Thermalite block?

It is important that you do NOT drill a pilot hole but equally you need to remove any plaster on the block as it would be too hard to hammer through with the nylon plug. You need to make sure that you don’t squeeze the legs together when you start hammering them in otherwise the legs won’t spread through the block properly.
