May is always a nice month to travel to Port Douglas, the stingers have usually gone by this time (traditionally stinger season ends in April) and the wet season has also come to an end. The weather starts to cool down somewhat with temperatures ranging between 20 – 28 degrees Celsius.

As the others have said, three days minimum. Skyrail is fantastic and well worth doing. You should allow half a day for that, and a little more time if you want to look around Kuranda (a bit touristy for my liking). Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation are well worth a look for their stunning scenery.

It’s with this in mind that we can safely say that Cairns is generally cheaper across the board than Port Douglas, particularly if you’re willing to book into backpacker style accommodations. Port Douglas’ smaller scale means there are fewer options to choose from.
