As the story goes, Ventile works by the cotton fibres swelling up and making it waterproof. This means the fabric gets wet, and when wet no more water will pass through.
What is Ventile material?
Ventile® is a completely natural fabric made from cotton. It is durable, highly breathable and quiet which makes it perfect for hunting, nature watching, bushcraft, nature photography and cold weather sports.
Is rubberised cotton breathable?
Rubberized cotton will not let water through. Although neither will a garbage bag, and it’s essentially as breathable. Not at all breathable, i.e., you will sweat, and if you sweat enough, you’ll be wet anyway.

How do you clean ventile fabric?
Caring for Ventile
- Gently brush or sponge off any dirt.
- Machine wash one item at a time in warm water on a gentle cycle using pure liquid soap.
- Reshape the garment on a hanger and allow to dry naturally avoiding direct sunlight.
- Iron carefully on a warm setting – this reactivates the DWR treatment.

When you go into the mountains fully dressed in everyday cotton jeans and midlayers and you are caught in a freezing drizzle or downpour in the colder seasons you’re pretty much done for.
