IEEE 802.3ab, ratified in 1999, defines Gigabit Ethernet transmission over unshielded twisted pair (UTP) category 5, 5e or 6 cabling, and became known as 1000BASE-T.

Multiple parallel fibers are known to be an acceptable solution for short-range links up to 500 m, but not for longer cable lengths (2 to 10 km) where the costs become excessive. However, a data rate of 400G with 16 x 25 Gbps parallel lanes would require 32 fibers per link for transmit and receive.
