Complete an event, fast travel to a tower, or advance time are what I’ve found to work. Otherwise, there are no standard save methods, which makes sense because of how the game changes with every event. Make sure you see the spinning white circle in the lower right corner though. Killing a captain/warchief saves the game too from my experiences.
