VTEC is a Honda trademark, and SOHC is a single-cam engine (Single OverHead Cam). Those are the two most common SOHC VTEC types I know of. The 4-cyl and 6-cyl SOHC VTEC. The early SOHC VTEC only had VTEC on the intake, later Honda figured out how to do VTEC on both intake and exhaust with a SOHC.

Where are the VTEC switches on a D15B?
In the flesh, the 3-stage VTEC D15B is a sleeper. The valve cover does not have any ‘VTEC’ wording and only the sharp eyed will recognize the engine as VTEC by noting the VTEC switches (yes, twoof them) located on top of the intake runners and the high 7200rpm red-line of the tach.
What’s the difference between SOHC and DOHC ZC engines?
There are both SOHC and DOHC ZC engines. The non-VTEC SOHC ZC is similar to the D16A6 (’91–’96) and D16Y4 (’96–2000) engine, but with more aggressive cam timing. The SOHC VTEC ZC is similar to the D16Z6 (’91–’96). The DOHC ZC is similar to the D16A1, D16A3, D16A8, D16A9 and D16Z5 engines.
What was the first Honda engine to use VTEC?
In 1989, Honda invented VTEC, implementing it first in the DA6 Integra RSi & XSi in April and followed by the EF8/EF9 CRX/Civic SiR towards the end of that year. Honda continuously refined VTEC and migrated it to other engines and one of the first benefactors was the D15B.
