This is a shallow venue on the edge of the New Forest National Park and situated at the mouth of Southampton Water.

Where can I fish in Solent?

Is Calshot beach car park open?

Can you fish at Lepe beach?

One of Hampshire’s forgotten marks which supplies some surprisingly good action from July right through to February. A fairly shallow venue but a good cast will put you in the depths of the Beaulieu River, especially at low water.

Shoreline structure such as docks, logs, vegetation, rock piles, and downed trees are ideal fishing spots. When you find structure, focus your fishing efforts in these areas. Walk around the lake or pond shoreline to find the best spots.

Pennington Sea wall is situated just to the west of Lymington as is a popular fishing spot. The area requires a shortish walk to get to but can produce good fish all year round. A favoured spot for bass and flatties with Gilthead Bream caught during the latter summer months.

“There are some very large sharks living in the area, such as porbeagle sharks and thresher sharks.” Thresher sharks can grow up to 20ft and are strong swimmers who can completely vault out of water. They are not aggressive but can be if provoked.

What fish are being caught in the Solent?

Is it safe to swim at Calshot beach?

Visit Calshot Beach It is popular with wind/kitesurfers and there is safe swimming in the lagoon. The spit also has an large saltmarsh area for those who love wildlife.

Can you fish off Hythe Pier?

The area of Hythe once housed large industrial buildings but the ground has now returned to something like its original state. The beach to which you fish can be accessed at most tides but on a very high you will be driven back on to the grass area behind the beach.

How did Calshot Castle survive the Civil War?

The castle had a keep at its centre, surrounded by a curtain wall and a moat. Initially heavily armed, it had a garrison of 16 men and as many as 36 artillery guns. The castle continued in use for many years, surviving the English Civil War intact and being extensively modernised in the 1770s.

When was the castle at Calshot in Southampton built?

Calshot was constructed on the narrow Calshot Spit, overlooking the deep-water channel running through into Southampton. Temporary earthwork defences and gun batteries were erected as an interim measure, but the castle itself was built quickly and finished by the end of 1540.
