Can I reproduce Ordnance Survey maps?

The National Library of Scotland is an Ordnance Survey Licensed Partner, so we are able to make copies of superseded Ordnance Survey maps that are in copyright, i.e. those published within the last 50 years but before 31 December 1995. The copies can be photocopies or images of the original maps.

How do I renew my OS Maps subscription?

If you have subscribed through iTunes or Google Play in the app, you can manage, change or cancel your subscription from your mobile device or from the app store on web. From an Apple mobile device: Go to Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions. Select Subscriptions, and then the subscription for OS Maps.

Can I use OS Maps offline?

Use the OS Maps app to download sections of map for use offline. In the app select Menu > My Offline Maps and click ‘ Add a custom offline map (Menu > Download offline maps on Android). Click ‘Download’ to save the area on screen plus about the same in each direction and name it.

Can Maps be copied?

Only one copy can be made at a time. The input map must be a locator map for the output to be a locator map; an empty map has no effect. A cartography table can also be used to clone a map. The parts of the world that have already been explored and mapped are copied, and newly explored areas appear on both instances.

How long are Maps copyrighted?

Generally, copyright protects a work for as long as the creator’s life plus an additional 70 years. If the author is not known, the creation is protected for 95 years or 120 years from the year of publication or production, respectively.

Are old maps worth money?

In general terms, a map is worth whatever the market will bear, so one way to get a sense for a map’s value is to look at how much it has sold for in the past.

Are old map books worth anything?

Pre 1850’s books can be particularly valuable if containing a map or several. In many cases these maps may have been removed to sell individually. These are generally good for framing and hold often a limited value purely from interest or age.

What is the difference between OS Explorer and Landranger maps?

OS Landranger Displaying roads, tourist features, footpaths, and rights of way. Landranger covers a larger area than Explorer but with less detail.
