A fetal heartbeat may first be detected by a vaginal ultrasound as early as 5 1/2 to 6 weeks after gestation. That’s when a fetal pole, the first visible sign of a developing embryo, can sometimes be seen. But between 6 1/2 to 7 weeks after gestation, a heartbeat can be better assessed.
Is it normal for pregnancy symptoms to come and go?
It can be perfectly natural to have a cycle of pregnancy symptoms that come and go. It’s also normal to have no symptoms at all.
What can you see at 5 weeks 2 days?
At this stage, the only things you’ll likely see are the yolk sac and the gestational sac. It’s possible that the sonographer might be able to point out the embryo, which at this stage is likely a tiny white curled object. Surrounding the embryo is the yolk sac, which will look like a small white circle.

Early reassurance scans are a fantastic way to confirm your gestation period and get a rough estimate of your baby’s due date. Providing that you are at least six weeks into the pregnancy, the sonographer will be able to take measurements of the baby, from the crown to the rump.

When is best to have an early scan?
We recommend having your early scan at 7 weeks because you’ll be able to see your baby on the screen. We’ll also be able to perform more health checks at this stage because we can check the heart. The earliest scan that’s going to look something like a baby would be at around 9 weeks.
