Do I need Mvhr?
Do I need Mvhr?
If you are looking to achieve Passivhaus levels of air tightness, then a MVHR is a must. To get the most out of your heat recovery system and ensure it is worthwhile, we recommend that the building is reasonably airtight and weatherproofed.
How good are Mvhr systems?
Health advantages. MVHR provides continuous year-round ventilation which prevent issues such as mould or condensation occurring. MVHR provides fresh filtered air to dwellings – good indoor air quality is essential for health and wellbeing and air is passed through replaceable filters in the unit.
Do you need radiators with Mvhr?
Your home is unique as the upper bedrooms will be heated via the MVHR system and they don’t need radiators. This should help reduce the amount of gas central heating that you use, and help keep your fuel bills low, as well as being kinder to the environment.
What size Mvhr do I need?
Generally, the capacity of a MVHR unit should be high enough to cover the nominal ventilation rate and at least 30% additional boost capacity. Ideally, the unit should run at 60-65% of its maximum capacity to work efficiently.
Is Mvhr expensive to run?
It costs approx. £15 – £40 per year in electricity to run an MVHR system constantly, but you might save a lot more than that on heating bills because it is recovering up to 90 per cent of the heat that would normally be lost to leaks and draughts in the building fabric.
Can I turn Mvhr off?
Fresh filtered air and good air movement also prevents mould growth so the MVHR should not be switched off. Maintenance of the unit will usually include changing filters, cleaning the ducts, cleaning the heat exchanger and cleaning the motor, although only the filters would require regular maintenance.
Can Mvhr cool house?
Can an MVHR system help to cool your home in summer? Yes, a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery system (MVHR) can help to cool your home in summer, and it does it in a way that is quiet and automatic, using only the energy equivalent of two LED lightbulbs.
Does Mvhr reduce dust?
Yes, all of our MVHR systems have F7 and G4 filters which will filter out pollen, carbon dust, insects, etc from the incoming air.
Can Mvhr heat a house?
Will it heat my house? MVHR will re-use the heat which already exists in your home produced by occupants and electrical equipment. Some systems can be designed to have an additional in line heater, to heat supply air, but this can only provide a small amount of heating.
How much electricity does Mvhr use?
How much electricity does it use? Green Building Store domestic MVHR systems typically have 2 very small motors which push the air through your system. An MVHR unit like Focus 200 uses 22 Watts. This is similar to having a low energy light bulb on in your home, costing around 10p per day.
How much does a Vent Axia cost to run?

Does Mvhr reduce humidity?
MVHR does not remove water from the air that it brings in, the absolve humidity remains the same.
Why do you need a properly designed MVHR system?
MVHR systems need to be properly designed to ensure you buy a correctly sized unit. If an MVHR unit is oversized it won’t provide efficient ventilation for the home. If it is undersized there won’t be adequate levels of ventilation, which will lead to poor indoor air quality and problems with condensation and mould.
Is it possible to run a MVHR duct system?
A good MVHR design by a company such as ourselves will work with you to create a ductwork design that doesn’t require boxing in, loss of room space or lowered ceilings everywhere – it is possible to run ducts without negatively impacting space, and I can discuss how with you.
When to use MVHR in a bathroom lighting system?
Traditionally MVHR is boosted on bathroom lighting but not every bathroom visit is a shower or a bath and so systems can boost unnecessarily. As an alternative, an in-duct humidistat can be fitted in the ducting, meaning the boost only triggers when humidity rises, avoiding nuisance running.
Is there a free service to design a ventilation system?
Luckily, there are design services available, such as the free service National Ventilation offers, which can help electricians by designing the ventilation system for their project. The free design services include a full design, kit list and recommended duct routes – whilst ensuring Building Regulations compliance.
