How did War Child Canada start?
Samantha Nutt has worked in war zones for more than half of her life. She founded War Child Canada in 1999 after working as a young doctor with children facing the violence and despair of war. She saw how long it takes for communities to recover from conflict after the guns fall silent.

War Child’s mission is to work with war-affected communities to help children reclaim their childhood through access to education, opportunity and justice. War Child takes an active role in raising public awareness around the impact of war on communities and the shared responsibility to act.

How many countries does War Child work in?
War Child is active in seventeen countries where children are forced to live with effects of armed conflict. In our programme countries, we have 487 colleagues helping them to deal with these effects and shape their own futures. War Child works in areas affected by armed conflict.
What kind of work does War Child do?
Our work has evolved from temporary food aid to ongoing, sustainable projects that improve the long-term outcomes for the most vulnerable and marginalised children in conflict areas. We’re still the only charity dedicated to protecting and speaking up for children affected by war.
Who are the founders of the War Child?
War Child was founded in 1993 by filmmakers David Wilson and Bill Leeson. On assignment in the former-Yugoslavia during the Bosnian war they were horrified by the violence and ethnic cleansing they witnessed. And especially its impact on children.
