Procedure

  1. Select File > Compile.
  2. If necessary, navigate to where the compiled translation objects are stored. Enter the name of the translation object and click Save.
  3. Verify that no errors occurred and click OK to exit the dialog box.
  4. Select File > Save to save the source map with the Compiled on date.

How do I compile a BSP file?

  1. Open the File menu, and choose “Run Map…”. Tip: You can also press F9.
  2. The dialog that appears is used to set up a compile: Make sure that “Normal” is set under “Run BSP”, “Run VIS”, and “Run RAD” settings. Tip: If you want to compile with High Dynamic Range, tick the checkbox.

To configure the options to export a BSP:

  1. Click File > Export… .
  2. Expand General, select Archive File, and then click Next.
  3. For the BSP project, you’ll need to deselect the top level folder.
  4. Expand the folder, and then select all of the files and folders under the top level folder that you deselected earlier.

Where does Hammer save maps?

You can save the VMF anywhere. The BSP (the compiled, playable map) is always copied to the game’s maps folder. I prefer keeping my vmf seperate from my bsp files.

The BSP file starts with a header. This structure identifies the file as a Valve Source Engine BSP file, identifies the version of the format, and is then followed by a directory listing of the location, length, and version of up to 64 subsections of the file, known as lumps, that store different parts of the map data.
