How do you respond to a paired passage?
We follow this process when tackling paired passages:
- Read the first passage, discuss it, and answer questions.
- Read the second passage, discuss it, and answer questions.
- Analyze the connection or similarities and differences between the two passages, re-reading them if needed.
What does paired text mean?

Paired reading is a research-based fluency strategy used with readers who lack fluency. In this strategy, students read aloud to each other. When using partners, more fluent readers can be paired with less fluent readers, or children who read at the same level can be paired to reread a story they have already read.

How to effectively teach paired passages and paired texts?
Paired passages and paired texts are a tricky skill for students, especially struggling readers. I have written about how I implement rigorous paired passage instruction here.
