How good is the Cold Steel Recon 1?

Cold Steel did an excellent job updating the Recon 1’s handle. They went with a linerless design and used two thick slabs of G10 for the handle. Some might find the lack of steel liners troubling on a hard use folding knife, but let me tell you – there is nothing to worry about.

The Cold Steel Recon Tanto. It’s tough, sharp, reasonably priced but there is a catch to getting one of these. First of all let’s discuss the uses of a knife as it will lead into why I like this model from Cold Steel as much as I do.

How big is the Cold Steel recon 1?

When it’s closed, the Cold Steel’s Recon 1 is almost normal in appearance (if a bit tactical). Its dimensions come in at 13.67 cm (5.38 inches), and the general proportions look to me very well engineered, especially taking into account how large in hand this knife really is. Though it’s certainly not a small knife, it’s definitely pocketable.

The tanto is Cold Steel’s specialty and the more tactical-style option, but I opted for the clip-point for practical reasons. The conventional wisdom here is that self-defense users should choose the tanto point, while utility-focused users ought to go with the clip version.
