Is 50 too old to start Aikido?
One of our students started at 50 and just earned his black belt at 61. You are definitely not too old, and your physical condition will improve with practice. I’m told that one very senior sensei of our line started at 49. Aikido doesn’t take enormous amounts of flexibility.

It’s beneficial for the physical condition and mental well-being of the person practicing it. But, is Aikido effective in a street fight for self-defense. Aikido is not effective in a street fight for self-defense, although it teaches defensive strategies such as joint-locks, throws, and strikes.

The style of Aikido we practice is specifically designed to be practiced without the throws, the most challenging aspect for seniors. At the same time, the training will be effective for self defense, improve strength and flexibility, circulation, and general health as well as overall attitude.

Any person can start practicing Aikido. There is no upper age limit. The uniqueness of Aikido is in the fact that you can start practicing it at any age. However, you have to understand that the most impressive results you can achieve if you start at school or when a teenager.

Aikido, when properly practised, looks “soft” and almost staged. Not many people realise that aikido is a combination of form and spirit—of body and mind. Martial techniques are about physical techniques, i.e., the body. But martial arts are about something more holistic.
Can kids learn Aikido?
I would not recommend aikido for kids before puberty. Aikido uses some moves that put a lot of pressure on wrists and elbows that could do some real damage on underdeveloped bodies. Similar to how we don’t teach kids to throw curveballs before they are 12-13. That sort of strain on a young arm isn’t good.
Why is Aikido so bad?
Aikido has many deadly techniques designed to break bones, disable an opponent, or knock them unconscious. However, it is rare for an Aikidoka to use these deadly techniques as it goes against the spirit of this martial art. An Aikidoka can throw an opponent in such a way that they’d break a part of their body!
What age should you start Aikido?
Generally, 8 seems the earliest starting age for Aikido. Every so often I allow the 10+ to attend an adult class. The adults as well as the kids get a great deal out of the class. (Comment from one of my adult students during Sunday’s Class: ” They use their bodies so much better than we do).
