Is hydrofoil easier than surfing?

Like any type of surfing, foil surfing is a lot harder than it looks. Even Kelly Slater, the best surfer in history, appeared to struggle during his first time on a hydrofoil. Compared to regular surfboards, hydrofoils require an extreme level of balance, skill, and fitness just to keep the board out of the water.

What are hydrofoil wings made of?

The basic core of the foil wing is 3 layers of 3mm ply, laminated together with glass between them (same as the mast).

What is a wake foil?

Wake Foiling and Surf Foiling are relatively new sports that have taken the boating industry by storm. The foils are designed to rise above the water at a certain speed (faster for Wake foils, and a slower speed for Surf foils) which makes it feel like you’re flying or floating above the water.

Are hydrofoils hard to ride?

They were fast, unstable and notoriously difficult to ride, as well as expensive, and were responsible for most of the horror stories you hear today around the beaches. Do hydrofoils make boats faster?

Hydrofoil stabilizers will redirect the water flow downward, reducing that resistance and helping the ship travel faster. While speed tends to be the primary benefit of hydrofoils, fuel efficiency receives a boost as well.

What’s the best way to make your own hydrofoil?

Cut a bit oversize, say 10mm over each edge. Cut another 2 ply pieces out of only the fuselage (bottom of the T) because you need the fuselage a bit thicker than the mast. Laminate the ply pieces together with a layer of glass and epoxy between each layer, clamp or weight it down and try and make sure it all ends up flat without a bow in it.

None of the build is particularly hard, but it is very time consuming – so expect to be spending quite a few hours and don’t expect to finish in 1 weekend. If you’ve made a board before, the experience with laminating will give you a big head start. 4 kg epoxy resin (West 105 or similar) you probably won’t use all of this, but rather get more.

What are the parts of the hydrofoil Instructable?

We will split the instructable in two parts. Part 1 (board, hydrofoil and propulsion unit) and part 2 (battery and controller) which is still under development.
