Is passivation only for stainless steel?

Is passivation only for stainless steel?

Stainless steel contains enough chromium to undergo passivation by forming an inert film of chromium oxide on its surface. But passivation occurs only if the proportion of chromium is high enough and oxygen is present. To passivate, stainless steel surfaces must be free of contaminants like free iron.

What is AMS2700?

This specification defines the engineering requirements for a process to assure removal of free iron or other less noble contaminants from the surfaces of corrosion resistant steel parts.

How often should you passivate stainless steel?

once per year
Yes, it is always a good idea to passivate them when new or at least once per year (more frequently if you brew often). Give them a good cleaning with TSP or PBW then passivate them with Star San at the dilution rate of 1 oz. per gallon of water.

Does passivation add thickness?

The purpose of passivation is to augment and optimize formation of the chromium oxide layer. The higher proportion of chromium at the surface allows for the formation of a thicker, more protective chromium oxide layer.

What are the different types of AMS 2700?

Note that all the “types” identified in AMS 2700 are nitric acid (Method 1) solutions. In other words, using a citric acid based (Method 2) passivation where not specifically called out as Method 2 on the drawing requires “purchaser acceptance”.

What kind of nitric acid can be used in AMS 2700?

Per AMS 2700: “Where no type is specified, the processor may use any of the listed types that meet the requirements given herein, unless citric acid passivation in accordance with Method 2 is acceptable to purchaser.” Note that all the “types” identified in AMS 2700 are nitric acid (Method 1) solutions.
