Q&A

What does scoring concrete mean?

What does scoring concrete mean?

Scored concrete features a series of groves that have been cut into the concrete to create a distinct pattern or design. It is different from stamped concrete in that texture is not imparted onto the surface of the slab.

Does concrete need to be scored?

If you want your cement floor to have the appearance of concrete tiling or cobblestone, scoring is the only way it will be achieved. If you want to add a design or unique appearance to your floor, concrete scoring is the way to go.

How do you score and cut concrete?

Use a standard circular saw, equipped with a corundum or diamond blade, for small tasks. For slabs, it’s best to cut through the top inch, then use a sledgehammer to break off the rest. The jagged edge left below the cutting line provides a good rough edge for the new concrete to bond to.

What are the lines in cement?

The lines are called Control Joints and Expansion Joints. They are the most widely used method to control cracking in concrete. Contractors place them in the concrete surface at predetermined locations to create weakened planes where the concrete can crack in a straight line or beneath the surface.

Do I need expansion joints in a concrete slab?

Expansion joints are virtually never needed with interior slabs, because the concrete doesn’t expand that much—it never gets that hot. Expansion joints in concrete pavement are also seldom needed, since the contraction joints open enough (from drying shrinkage) to account for temperature expansion.

How big of a score line do I need for a concrete floor?

Score lines do not have to be as deep as control joints, ¼” is sufficient, whereas joints must be cut to 25% the slab’s depth. Many tools are available for cutting pattern lines into concrete including grinders, hand-held saws, and special engraving tools designed specifically for scoring concrete (see Power Tools for Concrete ).

Can a groover be used to cut score lines in concrete?

If you know you want a scored pattern before your concrete is poured a groover can be used to make the lines in the fresh concrete instead of using a saw. Score lines do not have to be as deep as control joints, ¼” is sufficient, whereas joints must be cut to 25% the slab’s depth.

What do you do in concrete Score mode?

Concrete Score Mode is part of a selected Hardscape in the Hardscape & Decks stage. In this mode, it’s quick and easy to use the drawing tools to add expansion joints and scoring lines exactly where you need them. First, select the hardscape in 2D. Then, select Concrete Score Mode.

What kind of board do you use to score concrete?

Use a straight edge of some sort ( 2 x 4 board, piece of angle iron, etc.) Holding the straight edge firmly and the proper distance from the line to ensure the diamond blade is on the line, score away.
