What is LM3?
LM3 (Local Multiplier 3) is a methodology that can be used by companies, government, or community organisations to measure how their spending generates local economic impact and benefit to communities. More importantly, LM3 enables people to identify where changes need to be made to improve that impact.
How does LM3 work?
LM3 measures how income entering the local economy then circulates within it, across three ’rounds’ of spending. It was developed on the idea of the ‘leaky bucket’. A higher proportion of money re-spent in the local economy means a higher multiplier effect because more income is generated for local people.
How does the multiplier effect work?
The multiplier effect refers to the effect on national income and product of an exogenous increase in demand. For example, suppose that investment demand increases by one. Thus the national income and product rises by more than the increase in investment. The multiplier effect is greater than one.
