What is screening for substance abuse?
The goal of substance abuse screening is to identify individuals who have or are at risk for developing alcohol- or drug-related problems, and within that group, identify patients who need further assessment to diagnose their substance use disorders and develop plans to treat them (see Chapter 4).

If the patient says “Never” for all drugs in Quick Screen, reinforce abstinence.
When to use Nida modified assist for drug use?
If patient reports use of any drugs in the past three months, complete Questions 3-8. Score the NIDA-Modified ASSIST for illicit and nonmedical prescription drug use. Use clinical judgement if the patient reports use of multiple drugs but does not score highly on any of them (i.e., consider an intervention).
