How was ASIO formed?

ASIO was established in 1949 on an executive order, or charter, from Prime Minister Ben Chifley. It would operate under the executive of the government with specific requirements relating to staff and secrecy, rather than as an instrument of the government under the conditions of the Public Service Act.

A new Commonwealth Police Force was formed in 1960. It took on the responsibilities of the Commonwealth Investigation Service (CIS) that were not transferred to ASIO as well as broader law enforcement responsibilities. In 1979 it was renamed the Australian Federal Police.
