What is a plunger indicator?
Back Plunger Indicators. Back plunger indicators translate small linear distances into rotational movement to measure dimensions to 0
What should be avoided while using a dial indicator?
Don’t clamp indicator against the stem with a set screw. Too much pressure will make the rack spindle bind, causing the indicator to become sluggish and sticky. Don’t lock the indicator in position until you’ve set it carefully under proper gaging tension, that is, at least a quarter turn from its “at rest” position.
What are dial indicators used for?
The dial indicator is used to indicate the run-out (the misalignment between the workpiece’s axis of rotational symmetry and the axis of rotation of the spindle) of the workpiece, with the ultimate aim of reducing it to a suitably small range using small chuck jaw adjustments.
Where to mount a Starrett back plunger dial indicator?
Use the height gauge/tool post attachment to mount the Starrett back plunger-style dial indicator in your lathe tool post or the scriber clamp of your height gauge. Attach the indicator to the upright post with the swivel clamp.
What are the dimensions of a back plunger indicator?

How big is a 196a6z back plunger dial indicator?
Shank diameter is 1/4″ (6.3mm). Antimagnetic models are also available – (inch reading) 196A6Z and 196B6. For full use, the operator first chooses the proper contact from the three hardened contact points that come with each model. Then the contact should be brought against the work with enough pressure to give the hand one full turn.
