What was Kamen’s goal for starting a robot contest?
His solution to this cultural problem was to form an organization whose goal was to encompass all the trappings of our current culture, the obsession with sports and entertainment and make Science, Technology and Engineering, both a sport and entertaining. Most of all though, FIRST has started to attain that goal.
How did First Robotics start?
The first FIRST Robotics Competition season was in 1992 and had one event at a high school gymnasium in New Hampshire. That first competition was relatively small-scale, similar in size to today’s FIRST Tech Challenge and Vex Robotics Competition games.

Kamen was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1997. He was awarded the Lemelson-MIT Prize in 2002, and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in May 2005. While still a college undergraduate, he invented the first wearable infusion pump, which rapidly gained acceptance from such diverse medical specialties as oncology, neonatology, and endocrinology.
