What is fern bush?

Chamaebatiaria millefolium (also known as Desert Sweet or Fernbush) is a beautiful native shrub that brightens the garden in mid-summer with big clusters of bright white flowers. It also has attractive dried seed heads and olive-green foliage. Drought resistant perennial plant (xeric).

When to prune fernbush?

It is a robust grower all across the western US and Great Plains. It thrives in most soil types and does well when irrigated with drip irrigation systems (not the case for some native shrubs). How do you prune a fern bush?

Cut the outer edges of the fronds to create a desired shape. If you don’t like the way your fern is shaped, simply trim the outer edges until it’s to your liking. Use sharp scissors or kitchen shears to do the trimming. It’s best to only trim the outer edges after you’ve removed yellowing or dead fronds.

How do you stop ferns from spreading?

Glyphosate, a non-selective, systemic herbicide, kills the rhizomes as well as the fronds of many invasive ferns. Choose a day with little wind, and then spray the fern’s fronds liberally with a ready-to-use glyphosate solution.

Ice plant flowers grow in USDA plant hardiness zones 5-9 and will bloom for most of the summer and fall. Their foliage is mostly evergreen and, because of this, they make a great year-round ground cover. While the plant is evergreen, it will often have some dieback of foliage in the winter.

Should ferns be cut back for winter?

Lightly cutting back ferns in autumn before winter can help clean up your outdoor ferns in preparation for weathering winter conditions, but you don’t want to necessarily do a heavy pruning in fall or winter because the fronds that stay on all winter may help protect your fern in winter months.
