How does the AIS work?
How does the AIS work?
AIS works by taking your position and movements via the vessels’ GPS system or an internal sensor built into an AIS unit. Shore based stations also have equipment that receive AIS transmitted information and display it on an electronic chart showing ‘traffic’ within the waters near them.
How is AIS data collected?
Basic overview. AIS transceivers automatically broadcast information, such as their position, speed, and navigational status, at regular intervals via a VHF transmitter built into the transceiver. The signals are received by AIS transceivers fitted on other ships or on land based systems, such as VTS systems.
Can AIS be turned off?
Something we hear often about tracking vessels with Automatic Identification Signals (AIS) is that transponders can be turned off. AIS is a safety feature that helps captains avoid collisions with other ships, so even if they turn it off while fishing, they eventually turn it back on, especially in a busy port.
Can ships turn off AIS?
A ship’s crew may turn off its AIS broadcast for a variety of legitimate reasons, but this behavior may indicate that a vessel is hiding its location and identity to conceal illegal activities like fishing in no-take protected areas or entering another country’s waters without authorization.
