How big should a Conex compression fitting be?

It’s different for each size but for 15mm it’s about 1 whole turn after finger tight (from memory). They do NOT give a torque figure – which would be useless with the threads never being in the same state – even without tape/compounds! Some people think that’s too tight but I don’t have any trouble using the Conex spanner which is about 150mm long.

What’s the best way to tighten a compression fitting?

Neither are necessary or desireable. Make sure the pipe is pushed fully home into the fitting. Do the nut up hand tight then 3/4 to a full turn with the spanner. Put a drop of oil on the threads to make tightening smooth.
